My Dialectical Life: A Self-Help Tool for Recovery

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a highly-effective, evidence-based therapy designed to treat borderline personality disorder, self-injury, and other disorders that are manifested through extreme emotions that include suicidal thinking and planning.

DBT was developed by University of Washington professor Marsha Linehan, PhD and you can read more about her personal struggle with mental illness here. Dr. Linehan has described DBT not as a suicide prevention program but a treatment that helps people who are suffering from intense feelings and roller-coaster emotions create their own "life worth living."

The heart of DBT is skills training as described in Linehan's book Skills Training Manual for Borderline Personality Disorder.

My Dialectical Life is a peer-led psychoeducation program* designed by Amanda Smith to help individuals who are currently working with a licensed therapist or mental health professional get an extra boost in their skills training and for those people who have graduated from a DBT program and are looking for a way to stay connected with what they've already learned.

My Dialectical Life is an ingenious approach to help DBT graduates be mindful of our skills. It's amazing that no matter how much we "know" our skills, receiving the daily email will remind you to use that skill for the day. The other day, I got a daily skill email about sensations and had a crisis later in the day. Because the email was at the forefront of my mind, I used the skill and held a piece of ice and it kept me from making matters worse. Of all my daily emails, this subscription is the most valuable daily reminder and I look forward to getting the encouragement every morning! —LS, Maryland

So how does it work?
